Married couples unraveling is a common story element in the films of Iranian Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi, and the director’s latest project, “Everybody Knows,” isn’t going to change that. The filmmaker’s first Spanish-language drama stars Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem. The first international trailer has debuted, and it makes it clear the narrative will require gut-wrenching performances from each actor.

“Everybody Knows” stars Cruz as a mother who travels with her family to her small hometown outside Madrid, Spain for a local celebration. After an unexpected event occurs, the family begins to unravel as they’re forced to make moral choices that could destroy them. Anyone who has seen “A Separation” and “The Salesman” knows just how effective Farhadi can tell a story like this one.

The movie will world premiere as the opening night selection of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, making it the second Spanish-language film to do so after Pedro Almodóvar’s “Bad Education” in 2004. Farhadi was last at Cannes in 2016 with “The Salesman,” which won two festival prizes and went on to earn the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Cruz shared the best actress trophy at Cannes for “Volver” in 2006.

“Everybody Knows” does not have a U.S. distributor yet. Watch the international trailer below.
