Mad Max is taking a detour to the French Riviera. The long-awaited
sequel to the ’80s franchise will premiere out of competition on the Croisette
on May 14. Warner Bros. will open the film worldwide following its Cannes bow.

Starring Tom Hardy in a role originated by Mel
Gibson, “Mad Max: Fury Road” is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which gas and
water have become scarce resources. Usually a loner, Max Rockatansky (Hardy) joins
Empress Furiosa (Charlize Theron) as she and her band try to escape a savage
warlord.

The long gestating project went through a few different
starts and stops before finally getting in front of cameras in director George
Miller’s home nation of Australia. With “Fury Road,” Miller makes his return to
the action franchise he started, and to the action genre in general, as his
last directorial outing was “Happy Feet Two.” And by the look of those spectacular trailers,
boy are we a long way from dancing penguins.
