Jeremy Saulnier, who was previously announced as one of two directors of “True Detective” Season 3, has departed the show after two episodes. IndieWire has confirmed that the “Blue Ruin” and “Green Room” helmer had to leave the HBO drama due to scheduling conflicts after production took longer than anticipated and that Daniel Sackheim and series creator Nic Pizzolatto will divvy up the remaining six episodes between themselves.
“Director and executive producer Jeremy Saulnier has completed the first two episodes of ‘True Detective’ Season 3 and will be departing the production due to scheduling issues,” HBO said in a statement. “Daniel Sackheim has come on board as a director and executive producer for the series alongside series creator and director Nic Pizzolatto.”
Sackheim has worked on numerous series throughout his career, including directing credits on “Ozark,” “Better Call Saul,” “The Leftovers, “The Man in the High Castle,” “Game of Thrones,” and “The Americans”; he’s also produced “House,” “The X-Files,” and Amazon’s upcoming “Jack Ryan.”
Cary Fukunaga directed every episode of “True Detective” Season 1, whereas the second season featured such helmers as Miguel Sapochnik, Justin Lin, and Jeremy Podeswa. The show’s third season, which is slated to premiere sometime next year, stars Mahershala Ali and Carmen Ejogo.
