Trailer of the Week: Nicole Kidman and Tim Roth Act Their Hearts Out 'Grace of Monaco'

Before the Trailer, We Thought: We’ve written before about the much-publicized spat between director Olivier Dahan and producer Harvey Weinstein, but to recap, “Grace of Monaco” has had a pretty rough lead up to its premiere. The film was originally a part of The Weinstein Company’s awards season slate, only to be rescheduled for a less promising spring release, then pulled from the calendar altogether but scheduled to open the Cannes Film Festival. Dahan and Weinstein, meanwhile, apparently disagree about the political content of one subplot.

But even if we’re to put the film’s troubled history out of mind, Dahan’s “La Vie En Rose” is an overheated, bloated mess (for this writer) of a biopic salvaged by Marion Cotillard’s Oscar-winning performance. “Grace of Monaco” is at least focused on one particular slice of Grace Kelly’s life rather than the whole shebang, but we still weren’t terribly excited for it.

And Now? Well, it looks well acted, at least. The trailer music makes it seem more overblown at first glance than it actually seems, with Nicole Kidman (as Grace Kelly) and Tim Roth (as her husband Price Rainer) hitting some nice, sensitive notes as the feuding couple. It looks more promising than expected.

“Grace of Monaco” has no official U.S. release date yet, but it premieres at Cannes on May 14.
