Magnolia Picks Up Awards Momentum With Gotham Wins and Spirit Noms

Magnolia Pictures is already making quite a dent in the awards season, racking up two big wins for “Tangerine” at the 25th Gotham Independent Film Awards last night, in addition to multiple Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations not only for “Tangerine” but also of “Best of Enemies” and “Results.” Between the two Gotham wins and seven Spirit Award noms, this season marks a record for the distribution company in terms of nominations.
“Tangerine,” Sean Baker’s acclaimed comedy-drama about transgender prostitutes on a Christmas Eve adventure, was the talk of the town earlier this year due to the fact it was shot entirely using an iPhone. The film has parlayed its exposure into becoming one of the year’s dark horse contenders, picking up two Gotham Awards — Breakthrough Actress for Mya Taylor and the Audience Award — and four Spirt Award nominations, including Best Feature and Best Director. Other high profile Spirit Award nominations include “Best of Enemies” for Best Documentary and “A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence” for Best International Film.
