DNC: Lena Dunham, America Ferrera, Elizabeth Banks & More Strong Actresses Slam Trump
The Democratic National Convention kicked off Monday with a host of speeches from powerful luminaries, including First Lady Michelle Obama, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Senator Bernie Sanders. Yesterday, a different set of luminaries spoke at the convention, specifically famous actresses. Last night, “Girls” star and creator Lena Dunham, former “Ugly Betty” star America Ferrera, and “Pitch Perfect 2” director and “Hunger Games” actress Elizabeth Banks took on Donald Trump and all that he stands for.

Dunham and Ferrera opened their speeches with cheeky references to Donald Trump’s careless attitude towards women and immigrants. Dunham said, “My name is Lena Dunham, and according to Donald Trump, my body is probably a 2,” and Ferrera said, “My name is America Ferrera, and according to Donald Trump, I’m probably a rapist.” Ferrera discussed her experiences as the daughter of Honduran immigrants and Clinton’s favorable record on immigration, while Dunham discussed Clinton’s record on women’s rights.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Banks walked on the stage in a cloud of smoke to the tune of Queen’s “We Are The Champions,” mocking Trump’s similar grandiose entrance at the RNC just last week. She then went on to introduce herself and say, “Some of you know me from ‘The Hunger Games,’ in which I play Effie Trinket, a cruel, out-of-touch reality-TV star, who wears insane wigs while delivering long-winded speeches to a violent dystopia. So, when I tuned in to Cleveland last week, I was like, ‘Hey! That’s MY act!’”
Finally, Meryl Streep spoke as well and declared her unfettered support for Clinton. “What does it take to be the first female anything?” she said to the crowd. “It takes grit, and it takes grace. Hillary Clinton has taken some fire over 40 years of her fight for families and children. How does she do it? That’s what I want to know. Where does she get her grit and grace? Where do any of our female firsts, our path makers, where do they find that strength?”
Streep continued, :Nearly 100 years after women got the vote, you people have made history. And you’re going to make history again in November because Hillary Clinton will be our first woman president, and she will be a great president. And she will be the first in a long line of women, and men, who serve with grit and grace. She’ll be the first, but she won’t be the last.”
