Opus Docs has released a powerful trailer for the 2014 Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning documentary “Rich Hill.”

Directed by cousins Tracy Droz Tragos and Andrew Droz Palermo, “Rich Hill” refers to the small town of Rich Hill, MO. The film follows three teenage boys from poor families, examining the psychological and sociological impact that poverty has had and continues to have on them as they grow up.

Despite the bleak subject matter, the trailer manages to strike a careful balance between despondence and hope — effectively preventing the tone of the film from seeming sanctimonious.

The comment that closes out the trailer expresses this careful balance with a tragic kind of finesse. “This is what goes through my mind,” says one of the boys in the trailer. “God has to be busy with everyone else. And hopefully he will come into my life. I hope it happens. It’s going to break my heart if it don’t.”

“Rich Hill” will open in select theaters on August 1st. Shortly thereafter, on August 5th, the film will be made available on iTunes and VOD. You can watch the full trailer below.
