Viola Davis Set to Steal the Show in Steve McQueen’s Heist Thriller ‘Widows’
Variety is reporting that Viola Davis is set to star in “Widows,” a heist thriller from “12 Years a Slave” director Steve McQueen and “Gone Girl” author/screenwriter Gillian Flynn. The Oscar nominee will star as one of four widows who attempt to complete the heist that their husbands died trying to pull off.

Since directing the Best Picture–winning “12 Years a Slave,” McQueen has been at work on “Codes of Conduct,” an HBO miniseries. According to the Variety report, Jennifer Lawrence was in talks to co-star in “Widows” but had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict. Davis, who currently stars on ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder,” has received Academy Award nominations for “The Help” and “Doubt” and was most recently seen in “Suicide Squad.” Her next film is director/co-star Denzel Washington’s adaptation of “Fences,” based on a play in which she also starred (and for which she won a Tony).
Prior to “Slave,” McQueen directed “Hunger” and “Shame,” both starring Michael Fassbender. No other casting announcements have been for “Widows” as of yet.
