Watch: This Short Film Was Shot on the Last Batch of Fuji Film

In March 2013, Fuji discontinued Motion Picture Film production. The following year, first-time filmmaker Hunter Hampton decided to take the opportunity to shoot on Fuji film while it was still around, being distributed by third parties around the globe. He bought 10 film rolls off a guy named Guy, and the result is the video above. 

The video follows a couple, intercutting between scenes over the course of their relationship. All the while, it is voiced over by the two actors, using a blissfully tender conversation that took place prior to their engagement. Through the Aaton XTR camera that Hunter Hampton employs, we follow the lovers from a Malibu beach, to a coolly lit apartment, to a cafe, to a Chinese restaurant and to a kitchen, where the two quarrel over the husband’s feelings of jealousy towards the wife’s phone (specifically Instagram, the seductive bastard). As the rift between them widens, both lovers learn about forgiveness, compromise, beauty and connection. 

While the content of the film is nothing we haven’t seen before, one can appreciate the use of the film medium on an aesthetic and intellectual level. “I thought it would be ironic,” said Hampton in an interview with No Film School, “since it’s about technology and I did it on film.” Hampton does seem to display a proclivity to the medium as, with each Fuji frame, he captures the soft, natural light of the environment.
