‘Patrick Melrose’ Trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch Loses His Mind in Brilliant New Look at Showtime Series

Add the latest “Patrick Melrose” promo to the list of the year’s best television trailers. The five-part Showtime limited series stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a drug-addicted man trying to beat substance abuse and overcome the trauma of his abusive childhood. Hugo Weaving and Jennifer Jason Leigh play the titular character’s parents.

Showtime has debuted a new trailer for “Patrick Melrose” that expertly charts the character’s fractured psych. The rapid-fire editing style cuts between the past and present as we see Patrick’s abusive father and how the character’s childhood trauma still haunts his older self. The trailer has the frazzled, kinetic mania of a Danny Boyle film.

“Patrick Melrose,” which Cumberbatch also executive produces, premieres May 12 on Showtime. The seres is based on the literary series written by Edward St. Aubyn. Watch the trailer below.
