One of the biggest breakout performers of last year, Abraham Attah is following up his acclaimed debut in Cary Fukunaga’s “Beasts of No Nation” with a supporting role in Marvel’s highly anticipated “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” The 15-year old Ghanese actor was famously discovered by a casting director while he was playing soccer with his friends, and he’d go on to anchor the harrowing “Beasts” with a star-is-born performance that earned him the Indie Spirit Award for Best lead Actor, in addition to the Best Young Actor award at the Venice Film Festival.

Attah had lined up only one project since his breakthrough, the Christian Loubek-directed “Buffalo,” but now he’s on the Atlanta set of Marvel’s first standalone Spider-Man blockbuster. The actor’s role is being kept under wraps for now, and he’s just the latest in a string of recent cast additions that include Donald Glover, Martin Starr and Logan Marshall-Green. Previously announced cast members include Tom Holland, who made his Spider-Man debut to rapturous acclaim this summer in ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ plus Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Tony Revolori and Michael Keaton, who will be playing the film’s villain, The Vulture. Robert Downey Jr. will also appear as Iron Man.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” is being directed by Jon Watts, who can certainly identify with Attah after having his own 2015 indie breakout with the murder mystery thriller “Cop Car.” Watts has been intent on building a diverse cast in order to accurately represent the film’s Queens setting, and we’re thrilled to see Attah have the opportunity to join one of the biggest franchises on the planet. He certainly deserves it after his heart-shattering work in “Beasts.”

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” is set for a July 7, 2017 release.
