If you had to spend Thanksgiving with your conservative family members three days before an overreaching government policy became law, you’d be swearing, too. Which is why the new Ike Barinholtz and Tiffyany Haddish comedy, “The Oath,” deserves a Red Band trailer — that opening string of “fuck you’s” really brings out the bite in this zany political satire. With its Thanksgiving setting and October release date one month before Election day, “The Oath” will steel you for talking turkey with those conservative relatives.
Barinholtz writes, directs and stars as Chris, a high-strung 24-hour news junkie, who with his levelheaded wife (Haddish) must attend Thanksgiving with his conservative family. The movie is set over the three days leading up to the deadline for a new White House policy requiring American citizens sign a “loyalty oath” to the president. As Chris and Kai become increasingly disillusioned with the government, and their family, the holiday quickly devolves into a gut-punching throwdown. When two FBI agents (John Cho and Billy Magnussen) show up, the shit really hits the fan.
Roadside Attractions’ “The Oath” comes to theaters October 12. Watch the Red Band trailer below.
