Errol Morris Kick Off "BAFTA Guru" Initiative with Live Stream Event

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) unveiled a new program called “BAFTA Guru,” an interactive online educational initiative. The new site will be stocked with content from BAFTA’s extensive library of long-form lectures, master classes featuring notable artists such as Martin Scorsese, Joel and Ethan Coen, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and more.

On Sunday, November 6th, BAFTA will spotlight the launch of the new initiative with a live stream at its annual David Lean Lecture that will be given by Academy Award winning documentary filmmaker, Errol Morris (“Fog of War”). BAFTA is styling the lecture as a “return of the documentary category” to the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2012.

The stream will be the first time that an event originating from BAFTA headquarters in Piccadilly, London will be available live to an international audience. In partnership with BAFTA NY, the Errol Morris lecture will also be simulcast live at the Paley Center for Media in New York City. The lecture will be shown in the Bennack Theater on Sunday, November 6 from 3:00-4:30PM EST, and open to visitors to the Paley Center and BAFTA New York members and their guests. Morris participate in a Q&A following his lecture with questions from both the theater audience as well as those watching via BAFTA Guru. Questions will also be accepted on Twitter @BAFTA using #BAFTAlive, and on the Errol Morris Film Lecture home page.

Over the next year BAFTA Guru (www.bafta.org/guru) will add features to the site via a series of rollouts. Highlights featured in the launch include “Life in Pictures” strand, which interviews established actors, directors and craftspeople from the world of film and “The Big Questions,” where filmmakers and others answer questions about how they succeeded in their chosen field. Beginning in 2012, aspiring new creatives can upload profiles and showreels for discussion.

“BAFTA Guru is an exciting new development for the Academy,” commented Tim Hunter, Head of Learning and Events, BAFTA in a statement. It takes our Learning & Events programme to a wider audience and will allow the amazing roster of industry experts who we meet through our membership and Awards to support the next generation of practitioners. For the first time ever, we are able to live stream our David Lean Lecture with Errol Morris, to an international audience.”

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is an independent charity that supports, develops and promotes the art forms of the moving image by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public. In addition to its Awards ceremonies, BAFTA has a year-round Learning & Events programming.
