Director and writer Ava DuVernay, most known for her acclaimed 2012 feature "Middle of Nowhere," lends some unique insight on her creative process in this Academy Originals short video.

In DuVernay’s clip, she speaks about her major focus in film: exploring the lives of people of color and universalizing these stories. She also speaks about the process of making small, indie films, saying that "When you’re making a low budget film, a film for $50,000 or $200,000 there’s nowhere to hide."

The video is part of a series of videos created by the Academy, who have also featured Dustin Lance Black and Patton Oswalt.
