Trevor Noah To Remain Host of ‘The Daily Show’ Through 2022 Under New Extended Deal
Comedy Central not only has faith in Trevor Noah, but it’s also confident that civilization will still exist in five years. The cable network has extended its deal with “The Daily Show” host to continue through at least 2022.
As part of the deal, Noah will produce and host year-end “The Daily Show” specials for the channel. He’s also an executive producer on the upcoming companion series “The Opposition with Jordan Klepper,” which premieres on September 25.
The deal was announced Thursday by Comedy Central president Kent Alterman, who oversaw the transition to Noah from former host Jon Stewart in 2015. The announcement comes just days after “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” won its first Emmy, in the Outstanding Short Form Variety Series category, for “Between the Scenes,” which highlights discussions Noah has with the audience during commercial breaks.
“It’s incredibly gratifying to see the world catch up to him,” he said. “There was a lot of skepticism and doubt about Trevor. And on the one hand I think it was unfortunate people were kind of prejudging him. And also these are the kind of jobs that takes people a while.
“While I think people really underestimated Trevor, it really set up a nice context for people to really take notice when they did pay attention and see how impressive he is,” Alterman said. “His outsider perspective and his global perspective really helped him and it gives them a competitive advantage.”
“The Daily Show” has now found its new voice — and continues to expand its audience — under Noah. The show is set to end the 2016-2017 TV season as the only daily late-night talk show to post year-to-year growth in both total viewers and adults 18-49.
“Trevor is really a significant important voice in for the cultural conversation now,” Alterman said. “Trevor is going to end this quarter as the most watched late night host for millennials. You see where it started and where where it’s going. The trajectory is very positive and it’s just gratifying to see that the audience has really embraced him in such a big way.”
Noah will mark the second anniversary of his “Daily Show” hosting tenure on September 28. “I’m thrilled to be continuing this amazing journey with both fans of ‘The Daily Show’ and Comedy Central,” he said in a statement. “It’s really exciting to renew this contract for either five more years or until Kim Jong Un annihilates us all–whichever one comes first.”
