No stranger to playing men of a certain age, Ethan Hawke makes a musical turn as legendary jazz performer Chet Baker in “Born to be Blue,” set to premiere at TIFF later this month. The film, which is promised to be more immersive and creative than your standard biopic, is directed by Robert Budreau and marks his first feature film in 9 years, following his debut “That Beautiful Somewhere” in 2006.
The film chronicles Baker’s life in the late 1960s after many years of drug abuse and financial problems. “Blue” focuses on his attempt at a comeback and his struggle with unforeseen events that continue to pose a threat to his success and recovery. Hawke, who is riding high after his Oscar-nominated performance in “Boyhood” earlier this year, stars with “Selma’s” Carmen Ejogo, Callum Keith Rennie and Dick Bock.
K5 International will be selling the film at TIFF, where it will premiere in the Special Presentations section on September 13. Watch the exclusive clip above, courtesy of Variety.
