“Rick and Morty” is on a two-week hot streak. After going on an oddly satisfying Rick and Jerry adventure in “The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy,” the show turned in one of its best episodes in a while with “Rest and Ricklaxation,” a terrifying journey through the darker side of the main duo’s natures.

To dive further into the themes and thoughts behind both of those episodes, Adult Swim continued its weekly series of chats with the people at the top of the “Rick and Morty” story food chain. Co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland explained how the Toxic Rick/Toxic Morty storyline opened up more of the audience’s understanding about which parts of these characters are central to their identities.

Aside from Harmon and Roiland, these weekly inside-the-episode chats also include writers like Ryan Ridley and Mike McMahan, who offer additional insights into the season-long changes that these characters are going through. It’s interesting to hear them talk about playing with expectations, both from what these characters anticipate from each other and what the audience has to come to understand about them.

As Ridley explains, part of that comes down to these characters’ willingness to talk about their issues with each other without having to filter their thoughts. It’s made for a subtle shift in how the show approaches Rick, Morty, Jerry, and everyone else, but it’s delivered some of the most satisfying episodes of Season 3.
