At one point in the newly-released trailer for the acclaimed Swedish film “A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence,” a character comments that “this is not normal.”

Indeed, it is not. “A Pigeon Sat on a Branch” comes from absurdist filmmaker Roy Andersson (“Songs From the Second Floor”), crafter of brilliantly odd films for nearly half a century. As has come to be expected of the director, his latest weaves between the banal and the surreal and explores the human condition with an unflinchingly satirical eye.

The film’s official synopsis reads: “Like his previous features ‘Songs From the Second Floor’ and ‘You, The Living,’ Roy Andersson takes up the theme of ‘being a human being’ with this meticulously crafted, dreamlike black comedy. Sam and Jonathan, a pair of hapless novelty salesman, take us on a kaleidoscopic tour of the human condition in reality and fantasy, unfolding in absurdist episodes: a sing-along at a 1940s beer hall, a randy flamenco teacher, a thirsty King Charles XII of Sweden en route to battle, and a diabolical metaphor for the horrors inflicted by European colonialism. It is a journey that unveils the beauty of single moments, the pettiness of others, life’s grandeur, and the humor and tragedy hidden within us all.”

“A Pigeon Sat on a Branch” is presented by Darren Aronofsky and Alejandro González Iñárritu in anticipation of its June 3 release. Watch the trailer at the top of this post, and be sure to check out the film’s official poster below.
