This summer’s female-led “Ghostbusters” reboot has proven controversial among certain fans, with its trailer garnering more “dislikes” on YouTube than any other in history. Asked about this outrage in a new Guardian interview, star Melissa McCarthy seems unbothered: “All those comments — ‘You’re ruining my childhood’’ I mean, really,” she says. “Four women doing any movie on earth will destroy your childhood?”

“I have a visual of those people not having a Ben [Falcone, her husband], not having friends,” the actress continues, “so they’re just sitting there and spewing hate into this fake world of the internet. I just hope they find a friend.” The backlash is perceived by many as being fueled by sexism, as other reboots of ’80s movies haven’t faced the same degree of criticism well in advance of their theatrical release.

Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth co-star alongside McCarthy in the film, which is directed by Paul Feig. It marks his fourth consecutive collaboration with the actress, following “Bridesmaids” (which netted her an Oscar nomination), “The Heat” and “Spy.” “Ghostbusters” hits theaters on July 15.
