Emmy Predictions 2017: Outstanding Animated Program

Final Predictions (Updated September 5): "Archer" aims to repeat, but there's an outlier in the category that could shuffle things up.

Last Year’s Winner: “Archer
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: “South Park” has been nominated four years in a row, 12 of the last 13 years. “The Simpsons” has been nominated two years in a row, but previously had a 24-year hot streak before it missed out on a nod in 2014.
Fun Fact: “The Simpsons” and “South Park” have been duking it out in this category for as long as the latter has been in existence. Fox’s iconic comedy has 10 awards and 25 nominations, while Comedy Central’s most heralded series of all time has five wins and 15 nods.

We’re only two years removed from “Over the Garden Wall” not only scoring a surprise nomination, but winning the whole darn category. Could that bode well for “Elena and The Secret of Avalor,” especially in a year when some of the more well-known titles didn’t have standout seasons?

Perhaps, but the other nominees didn’t have bad seasons either. “Archer” was last year’s winner, and in 2017 it’s nominated for “Dreamland” (Season 8). The ambitious storytelling and stunning visuals could resonate with voters who’ve already given it one award. But if we’re going to do a little time travel to make a case for “Elena,” it’s worth noting every other nominee has won this category before.

“The Simpsons” has won a record 10 times, but the long-running Fox sitcom hasn’t snagged the top prize since 2008. “South Park” won in 2013 and has the second highest total wins overall, but “Bob’s Burgers” beat it the following year (2014) and has been nominated every year since.

Below are IndieWire TV Critic Ben Travers’ predictions for Outstanding Animated Series, which will be updated throughout the awards season.
