greater-than-ever influence in American pop culture — from food to
entertainment to literature. But despite their contributions and three
centuries of presence, there is still a bitter and raging argument over

The documentary “Harvest of Empire,” based on the eponymous book by Juan Gonzalez, takes an unprecedented
look at the side of American history that is largely unknown to most of
the country. Gonzalez tells us in the beginning of the film, “They never
teach us in school that the huge Latino presence here is a direct
result of our own government’s actions in Mexico, the Caribbean and
Central America over many decades — actions that forced millions from
that region to leave their homeland and journey north.”
This film
