Sickness in a parent, when seen from their child’s perspective can be frightening, difficult to understand and tricky to overcome. Director Floria Sigismondi‘s (“The Runaways”) short chronicling a father’s alcoholism in “Leaning Towards Solace” captures this in a visually striking, beautifully edited way, rightfully scored by the talented Icelandic post-rock band, Sigur Ros.
Starring Elle Fanning and John Hawkes, the film centers on two characters: a father with alcoholism and his daughter’s attempt to save him from it — parts we’ve seen these actors play beautifully before. As a package, their performances, the score, and the visual composition deliver a raw and emotional perspective.
Presented as one of many short films in the Sigur Ros”Valtari” album’s Mystery Film Experiment, “Leaning Towards Solace” features two songs, “Dauõalogn” and “Varúõ.” To see these other short films, check out the album’s webpage. But first, sit back and watch this one.
