Josh Hutcherson Make Directorial Debut with Short Film 'Ape,' Based on Black List Script

Condé Nast Entertainment, Indigenous Media and Josh and Michelle Hutcherson’s Turkeyfoot Productions today announced the five screenplays they’ve for a joint venture known as “The Big Script” Film Incubator, a project powered by the Black List. (An annual survey of Hollywood executives’ favorite unproduced screenplays, the Black List was founded in 2005 and has yielded enormous critical and financial success.) Indigenous will produce a short film based on each script, all of which focus on characters in their late teens and early twenties, while Hutcherson will make his directorial debut with “Ape.” All others will be directed by the screenwriters. “Ape,” by Jon Johnstone: To take control of his life, Travis Wilker must conquer the hallucinations that plagued his childhood.

“Boy in a Backpack,” by Bradley Martocello: Pax signs up for a charity race with his quadriplegic brother so he can pay off a drug debt, but he soon realizes that he can’t outrun his past.

“Crowbar Smile,” by Jamie Mayer: Nate’s simple summer job mowing the lawn of a neighbor woman leads to a life changing encounter.

“Honor Council,” by Scott Simonsen: A high school whodunnit about a stoner teacher and the school troublemaker as they discover what it means to be honorable.

“Lyra,” by Djochoua Belovarski: As Earth falls apart, young-and-in-love Miriam is given an opportunity that can change her future.

Hutcherson will also act in “Ape,” for which production has already wrapped. All five short films will play on The Scene and have the potential to be expanded into features.
