Colin Farrell Says Next Yorgos Lanthimos Film Made Him Nauseous And Is Even Bleaker Than ‘The Lobster’

With just a couple weeks left before film critics start listing the best movies of 2016, it’s safe to assume Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “The Lobster” will be included on many of them. A darling of the 2015 festival circuit, the dark romance satire arrived in theaters this summer to critical acclaim, most of which singled out the never-better Colin Farrell in the lead role. No wonder expectations are sky high for the duo’s next collaboration, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” which co-stars Nicole Kidman and Alicia Silverstone.

In a new interview with Business Insider, Farrell couldn’t help but tease the project, which is currently in production. The story, which has been described as a “psychological thriller with supernatural elements,” finds the actor playing a surgeon who takes a teenager under his wing and makes an “unthinkable sacrifice” because of his behavior. This choice causes his world to unravel, and it sounds like the kind of dark material Lanthimos relishes.

“I can say it’s — ugh, God — it’s eerier than ‘The Lobster,'” Farrell said of the film. “It felt pretty bleak to me. I mean, when I read the script it was extraordinary and to work with Yorgos again was amazing…There are so many interpretations that this film could be approached from. But Yorgos is so specifically minded, he’s so clinical in his direction of the film. He’s really a master I feel, I really do.”

As for more plot details about the film, Farrell added, “I’ll wait to see what the film is, but it’s set in a contemporary world, in America, there are hospitals and diners, parks, things that we will recognize and experienced ourselves but yet there’s this similar kind of uneasiness through all the interactions and all the things that take place. It was unnerving reading the script. I kind of felt nauseous after reading it.”

Farrell can be seen on the  big screen this Friday in “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.” Expect “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” to hit the festival circuit sometime next year.
