Rooney Mara in David Fincher's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"

Rooney Mara, you’ll surely recall, solidified her presence in the film world by starring in David Fincher’s remake of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” after stealing the opening scene of his “The Social Network” a year earlier. The film was always intended as a one-off for its director, who had no intention of helming any further entries in the series (there are four novels), but that may not be true of Mara. Asked about returning to the franchise in a Screen Daily interview, the actress responded, “Yes, I’m still open to it but I’m not holding out hope any more.”

Mara received an Academy Award nomination for her starring role in the film; she received another, in the Supporting category, for her performance alongside Cate Blanchett in last year’s “Carol.” The role of Lisbeth Salander was originated onscreen by Noomi Rapace, who came to international attention for headlining the original Swedish trilogy (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played with Fire,” “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest”).

The first three entries of the “Millennium” series (as the novels are collectively known) were written by Swedish author Stieg Larsson, who died before any of the eventual best-sellers were published. Mara will next be seen in “Una,” which recently premiered in Toronto.
