The buzz around John Cameron Mitchell‘s “How To Talk to Girls At Parties” quieted down soon after the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last year, but A24 is here to change that with the debut of the film’s wild official trailer. The preview mixes “Eyes Wide Shut” cult orgies with Mitchell’s “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” punk to make it clear this is not your average coming-of-age story.

“How to Talk to Girls At Parties” is based on the short story of the same name by Neil Gaiman. Elle Fanning plays a rebellious alien who sparks up a romance with a British teen (Tony winner Alex Sharp) and becomes obsessed with London’s punk scene. The alien’s newfound sense of humanity puts her at odds with her leader, played by Nicole Kidman.

The film marks Mitchell’s first feature directorial effort since “Rabbit Hole” in 2010. Kidman earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in the drama, but her newest collaboration with Mitchell is far more unhinged. Considering the trailer’s display of over-the-top performances and outlandish costumes, it’s clear Mitchell has punk vibes running through every frame of his new film.

IndieWire’s Eric Kohn called the film a “bizarre return to form” for Mitchell in his review out of Cannes. “The film acts as vessel for the attitude coursing through all of Mitchell’s work,” Kohn wrote. “Even the most outrageous behavior comes from a real place.”

A24 will release “How To Talk To Girls At Parties” in theaters this summer. Watch the distributor’s official trailer below.
