‘Community’ Once Again Survives Cancellation, This Time Thanks to Yahoo

'Community' Once Again Survives Cancellation, This Time Thanks Yahoo

Congrats, “Community” fans, here’s your sixth season: This afternoon, Yahoo and Sony Pictures Television announced a deal to save the long-running sitcom from a fate called cancellation.

After NBC decided not to bring back the show last month, Hulu was considered the favorite to rescue “Community,” due to its pre-existing exclusive deal for past episodes, but failed to pick up the option. And meanwhile, Yahoo’s streaming content has always been rather lackluster — while it was the host of the fantastic “Burning Love,” the reality show parody found larger audiences only when it moved to the E! network

So it’s a bold play to pick this show up, and not a cheap one either: According to The New York Times, “Community” “is expected to retain all the regular cast members who appeared last season.” That means no Donald Glover and no Chevy Chase, but it does mean the in-demand Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Bree, Danny Pudi and Yvette Nicole Brown. (Fingers crossed for Jonathan Banks, while we’re at it.)

Does this make Yahoo the next Netflix? Far from it. But saving “Community” indicates a clear play for becoming a destination video site — Yahoo just has to hope that people will stick around for more.
