Hurricane: Cold War Comes Home in Clip From Award-Winning Short

The Cold War isn’t over. At least, within the confines of Christiano Dias’ award-winning short, “Hurricane,” it’s not.

Starring Lisa Roumain, Corey Page and David Jay, the short is a dark comedy set against the backdrop of the Cold War that chronicles a seemingly normal husband and wife’s unexpected encounter with a suspected Communist. It’s funny and sharp and charmingly relevant. Despite its period setting, for writer and director Dias, “Hurricane” couldn’t be a more timely outing.

“‘Hurricane’ was made as a direct result of my own illogical fears of the growing threat of terrorism in the United States,” Dias said in an official statement. “Much like the Cold War sparked the same fears of Communism in the 1950s, the growing threat of terrorism can lead many people to ‘over-react’ concerning these same insecurities. Additionally, some of the same feelings toward Russia and Communism as a whole have started to re-emerge and wanted to show that history is very capable of repeating itself yet again.”

He added, “‘Hurricane’ is a commentary on how those same feelings can cause one to imagine the worst in the most innocuous situations – even to the point of acting upon those imaginations.”

If you’re in Los Angeles, you can check out “Hurricane” in full on November 2, when it screens as part of El Cid’s Short Film Night. You can find out more about the short at its official Facebook page.
