Awards Roundup: Annette Bening to Receive AFI Tribute, Shirley MacLaine Honored With LAFCA Award and More

– The American Film Institute will honor actress Annette Bening with a tribute at AFI Fest on Wednesday, November 16 followed by a gala screening of her new film, “20th Century Women,” written and directed by Mike Mills. The tribute will celebrate her career and include a conversation with the actress.
“Annette Bening is a modern-day icon of American cinema,” AFI Fest director Jacqueline Lyanga said in a statement. “In ’20th Century Women,’ she finds one of her richest roles yet, delivering a strong performance that anchors the film’s terrific ensemble cast.”
Bening has been nominated for an Academy Award four times, for her performances in “The Grifters” (1990), “American Beauty” (1999), “Being Julia” (2004) and “The Kids Are All Right (2010).”
– The Los Angeles Film Critics Association will honor Shirley MacLaine with the 2016 Career Achievement award, which will be given at the annual awards dinner to be held Saturday January 14, 2017 in Los Angeles.
LAFCA’s other top awards will be decided by the membership on December 4, and awarded at the January dinner.
“I’m thrilled with the honor by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the recognition and the encouragement,” MacLaine said in a statement. Her next film, the comedy “The Last Word,” hits theaters next spring. LAFCA will be dedicating this year’s awards ceremony to director Curtis Hanson (“L.A. Confidential,” “Wonder Boys”), who died on September 20.
-The Key West Film Festival will present Academy Award-nominated costume designer Mary Zophres with a career achievement award as a part of its first annual Costume Design Focus program. Known for her work with Joel and Ethan Coen, Zophres has served as costume designer on “The Big Lebowski,” “Fargo,” “No Country for Old Men,” “True Grit,” “La La Land,” “Hail, Caesar!,” “Catch Me If You Can” and “Interstellar.” The award will be presented by Dr. Deborah Nadoolman Landis, a Costume Design Governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
“We are so proud to be putting a focus on costume design, an often overlooked art form that truly creates the artistry and magic of movies,” Michael Tuckman, Director of Programming of the Key West Film Festival, said in a statement. “It’s a natural extension of the community of Key West in keeping with the creative handmade spirit that thrives here, from Fantasy Fest to the island’s rich historic tradition of cultivating local artists and writers. And what better way to begin this annual showcase than with Mary Zophres, who is not only among the most accomplished costume designers to ever work in the movies, but also a native Floridian to boot, hailing from Fort Lauderdale.”
– Emmy-winning production designer René Lagler will receive the Art Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award at the 21st Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards on Saturday, February 11, 2017 in Los Angeles.
A recipient of five Emmys and 18 Emmy nominations, Lagler designed more than 2,500 television shows and major events and is best known for his designs for awards shows and specials, sitcoms, talk shows, network news shows, and game shows.
Lager designed the 57th Academy Awards, for which he won an Emmy; the Grammy Awards from 1983 to 1987; the Emmy Awards; and the Country Music Awards from 1991 to 2006. He was Production Designer for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and for seven events for David Wolper’s Liberty Weekend in 1986 celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, for which he also won an Emmy.
