Warner Brothers is continuing the dazzling marketing campaign for Ryan Gosling‘s “Lost River” with a hypnotic featurette that introduces the sprawling cast and teases the story arc for Christina Hendrick’s single mother, Billie.

A macabre and fantastical film set against the backdrop of a fading city, “Lost River” centers on an impoverished, struggling mother (Hendricks of “Mad Men” fame) who is immersed in a dangerous mystery after her teenage son finds a secret road that leads to an underwater town. The featurette above foreshadows Billie’s degrading job in the town’s carnivalesque brothel with striking, ominous visuals and the startling image of Hendrick’s peeling her own face off. 

Ever since the drama premiered to lackluster reviews at the Cannes Film Festival last May, moviegoers and Gosling fans have been wondering how Warner Brothers would market the picture, and the studio has done a tremendous job selling the dreamlike mood of the picture and its visually stimulating cinematography by Benoît Debie (“Enter the Void,” “Spring Breakers”). The new featurette excitingly showcases the synth-heavy score by Johnny Jewel as well.

“Lost River” stars Hendricks opposite Iain De Caestecker, Matt Smith, Eva Mendes, Saorise Ronan, Ben Mendelsohn and Rob Zabrecky. Warner Brothers will release the picture in theaters and On Demand April 10.
