‘Rectify’ Renewed for Season 3 by SundanceTV Prior to Season 2 Finale
“Rectify” has been picked up for a third season by SundanceTV. Created by Ray McKinnon, the meticulously paced drama has enjoyed a critically hailed Season 2 after an equally beloved first season.
“‘Rectify’ has evolved into a show much loved by critics and fans,” said SundanceTV President Sarah Barnett in a statement. “As SundanceTV’s first scripted series, it’s gratifying to see such distinctive and unusual storytelling embraced with such passion. Ray McKinnon is a true television auteur, and we can’t wait to see where he takes us next.”
SundanceTV has been pushing auteur-driven television — or shows helmed to reflect a singular, passionate vision — before “True Detective” made it trendy. Their second original scripted series, “The Red Road,” is the work of creator Aaron Guzikowski (“Prisoners”) and “The Honorable Woman” is a miniseries with every episode written and directed by Hugo Blick. “The Red Road” was picked up for a second season in April for a 2015 release.
“Rectify” Season 3 will also see a release sometime in 2015: Season 1 premiered in late April for its six episode run, while Season 2 started a bit later, premiering at the end of May for an extended 10 episode run. SundanceTV has not announced the length of Season 3. In an interview with Indiewire, Ray McKinnon said the length of the season was determined primarily by the story.
“I felt like we had six episodes to tell a story [in Season 1],” McKinnon said then. “We didn’t know if we’d have any more episodes to tell [it]. That wasn’t guaranteed, and I just felt like let’s not have any regrets. Let’s tell the story that we want to tell, that I want to tell, and not feel like we became afraid and were pandering.”
The Season 2 finale of “Rectify” will air Thursday, August 21 at 9pm.
