FilmRise has acquired select U.S. rights to the Cannes Classics documentary “Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans,” a searing portrait of one of Hollywood’s greatest icons during the production of the film that nearly destroyed him. The Brooklyn-based film and TV distributor will release the film in select theaters in New York and L.A. on November 13, as well as day-and-date on VOD, DVD and Blu-ray.

The documentary follows the iconic actor as he mounts a passion project centered around his love for car racing. McQueen wanted to create a sports drama set at Le Mans, a 24-hour car race in France, but the production was plagued by financial troubles, on-set rivalries and rumors of McQueen’s own scandalous affairs, all of which unraveled the actor’s personal life and turned the film into a nightmare. The film mixes interviews with McQueen’s family and friends with never-before-seen production footage and the actor’s private tape recordings.

“To this day, Steve McQueen remains one of the most iconic figures of Hollywood,” said FilmRise CEO Danny Fisher. “We are honored to bring to audiences this haunting documentary that not only sheds light on such an important figure in American culture, but also reveals the behind-the-scenes drama of one of the most controversial film productions.”

The film premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and marks the fourth collaboration between BAFTA nominees Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna. Before it hits theaters, the doc will play the San Sebastian Film Festival in October.
