Trey Shults Tests Family Bonds in Atmospheric Horror Film ‘It Comes At Night’ — IndieWire On Demand

Trey Edwards Shults made a name for himself with tense family drama “Krisha,” one of the surprise hits of 2016 that introduced the indie world to the young filmmaker, and of course his aunt, the eponymous Krisha. For his sophomore follow-up, Shults turns to a different family, one helmed by Joel Edgerton, in an atmospheric horror offering that definitely sits alongside fellow A24 offering “The Witch,” with prolonged dread and hinted at horror.

In “It Comes At Night,” Paul (Joel Edgerton) and his family are struggling to survive during the aftermath of a plague that has wiped out most of civilization. The family’s quiet if not claustrophobic existence is suddenly interrupted by the arrival of an intruder, Will (Christopher Abbott), who is interrogated before he and his family are reluctantly allowed into Paul’s home — and then suspicions and tension begins to mount.

In his A- review, IndieWire Eric Kohn called the film an “expertly-told look at family bonds jeopardized within the claustrophobic boundaries of a creepy home,” where the stakes have moved beyond the addiction of “Krisha” and now “involve matters of life and death.” In the video In the video above, IndieWire Senior Film Critic David Ehrlich explains why “It Comes At Night” strikes so close to home, despite its post-apocalyptic setting.
