Cinema Guild Acquires Pedro Costa's Ghost Story 'Horse Money'

Cinema Guild has acquired all North American distribution rights to Pedro Costa‘s ghost story “Horse Money” ahead of its U.S. premiere next week at the New York Film Festival. The acclaimed drama earned Costa the Best Director Prize at the Locarno Film Festival in August and garnered even more impressive reviews at its Toronto International Film Festival screening earlier this month.

Similar to the director’s last three films, “Horse Money” is set in the squalid Lisbon neighborhood of Fontainhas and focuses on the plights of Cape Verdean immigrants haunted by the country’s Carnation Revolution. The film follows real-life immigrant Ventura, star of Costa’s “Colossal Youth,” and is another darkly poetic examination of Fontainhas’ impoverished residents through the lens of the immigrant’s quiet, soul-searching wandering. More subdued and cryptic than its predecessors, Costa’s latest resembles a cinematic tone poem.

“Pedro has created an audacious and haunting masterpiece; a film that will resonate with anyone who sees it. We are honored and excited to be releasing it,” commented Cinema Guild’s director of distribution Ryan Krivoshey. “There’s a growing audience in the U.S. for smart, innovative cinema and we look forward to introducing them to this magnificent film.”

No release date has been set at this time.
