There’s perhaps no film coming out this fall that carries as much acclaim as Kenneth Lonergan‘s “Manchester By The Sea.” The most universally adored drama to come out of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the heart-rendering family drama earned one rave after the other, ultimately selling to Amazon for a huge $10 million. Oscar buzz pretty much skyrocketed the minute the first screening ended back in January, and now everyone can see what the acclaim is about in the powerful debut trailer.

Lonergan’s third feature after “You Can Count on Me” and “Margaret,” “Manchester By The Sea” stars Casey Affleck as a man who moves back to his New England home in order to take care of his deceased brother’s 16-year-old son (Lucas Hedges in a revelatory performance). Affleck’s character, Lee Chandler, is made his nephew’s legal guardian, but connecting with the grieving child and stepping back into his old smalltime life uncovers both old and new wounds for everyone involved. Michelle Williams co-stars as Lee’s estranged wife.

In his review out of Sundance, Indiewire’s Chief Film Critic Eric Kohn raved, “Lonergan wrings so many nuanced exchanges out of a first-rate set of performances that the story rarely drags or rings false. This is a filmmaker who excels at the slow-and-steady approach.”

Amazon is partnering with Roadside Attractions for the film’s theatrical release, which will begin on November 18. Watch the official trailer below, courtesy of IMBD.
