Todd Haynes‘ “Carol” is shaping up to be one of the dominant players this awards season. After earning both critical acclaim and a Best Actress prize for Rooney Mara at Cannes in May, the film has now been selected to screen at both the New York Film Festival in September and the BFI London Film Festival this October. Haynes will also be receiving the Directors Tribute at IFP’s 25th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards in November, just days before The Weinstein Company opens “Carol” in select theaters.
Based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Price of Salt,” the film chronicles the blossoming romance between two women in 1950’s New York City, one a married wife (two-time Oscar winner Blanchett) and the other a lonely department store worker (Mara). Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler and Jake Lacy also star.
Set to Martha Mears’ “My Foolish Heart,” the gorgeous teaser above is full of emotional gazes and lavish images and costumes. The hazy, photographic-like cinematography from Haynes’ longtime DP Edward Lachman also looks to be a standout.
“Carol” hits theaters November 20.
