Doctor Strange” is shaping up to be Marvel’s “most exciting addition to their ever-expanding universe since ‘The Avengers,’” per IndieWire’s David Ehrlich review. Adding to the film’s overall amazing psychedelic imagery is Oscar winner Michael Giacchino’s dynamic score.

The soundtrack marks the composer’s first time working with Marvel. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and features an 80-piece orchestra conducted by Tim Simonec. The album features 19 songs that vary from dark, hypnotic and mysterious to some tracks even having a psychedelic ‘70s and ‘80s rock feel.

“Michael Giacchino’s score does so much more than support the visual images, it adds new, additional layers of meaning and emotion to the film,” stated director Scott Derrickson in a statement. “The ‘Doctor Strange’ theme is memorable, moving and yes, magical. I don’t know what the movie would be without it.”

“Doctor Strange” stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon who loses the use of his hands after he suffers a tragic accident. While he’s in Tibet looking to find a cure, he meets The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) who teaches him the hidden world of magic.

Giacchino is an accomplished composer who won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2009 for “Up” and was also nominated in the same category in 2008 for “Ratatouille.” His resume is quite impressive and includes scores for “Star Trek,” “Lost,” “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” “Jurassic World,” and “Zootopia,” among others.

His next big production this year is the score for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and is also set to create the music for “The Book of Henry,” “War for the Planet of the Apes” and “The Incredibles 2.”

The “Doctor Strange” soundtrack was released on digital platforms on October 21. The physical copy will be made available following the film’s release. Listen to the full score in the Spotify playlist below.
