Kino Lorber Repertory to Release 10-12 Restored Classics Per Year, Starting With 1981’s ‘The Pit’

The newly launched offshoot draws from a library of 1,500 titles.

Kino Lorber, longtime distributor of art-house titles from the world over, has announced a new offshoot: Kino Lorber Repertory, which will release 10-12 restored classics and lesser-known offerings per year. First founded in 1977, the New York–based company boasts a library of more than 1,500 titles to draw from.

First on the docket is 1981’s “The Pit,” a cult favorite of the Canuxploitation genre that will screen throughout the country in October before being released on Blu-ray.

Jonathan Hertzberg, the distributor’s Director of Repertory Sales and Acquisitions, will curate Kino Lorber Repertory. In a statement, he says that the new endeavor “will give us a dedicated spotlight for our ever-growing list of classics and cult films, and also remind exhibitors and audiences of the many wonderful, historically-significant titles already in our catalog.” Recent first-run titles from Kino Lorber include “As I Open My Eyes” and “Ixcanul.”

Following “The Pit” will be Philip Kaufman’s “The Wanderers,” first released in 1979, with offerings from Lina Wertmuller, Jean-Luc Godard and Josef von Sternberg planned as well.
