Sacha Baron Cohen to Remake Danish Cult Comedy ‘Klown’ with Annapurna
Megan Ellison’s Annapurna has won a bidding war at the American Film Market to remake the 2010 Danish comedy “Klown” with Sacha Baron Cohen attached to star, ScreenDaily reports.
Baron Cohen and Todd Schulman’s production company Four By Two will produce alongside Annapurna. Scott Stuber will also serve as a producer on the project.
Directed by Mikkel Norgaard and produced by Lars Von Trier’s Zentropa, “Klown” is the highest-grossing film in Danish history. The film centers on a man trying to prove his worth as a father-to-be by taking his pregnant girlfriend’s 12-year-old nephew on a weekend canoe trip with his best friend. Baron Cohen and Annapurna are expected to shop the project to buyers together at AFM on Friday. Norgaard also directed a sequel to the film, “Klown Forever,” which was released in 2015. In the sequel, which stars Baron Cohen’s wife Isla Fisher, the two characters take a trip to Los Angeles.
CAA packaged the project and will rep the movie’s U.S. distribution rights, with Annapurna International handling international sales. Baron Cohen recently starred in 2016’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” alongside Anne Hathaway, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, and “The Brothers Grimsby” alongside Rebel Wilson and Mark Strong.
