1. Disney Acquires Maker Studios: It’s not surprising that Disney wants to get a piece of YouTube in the form of Maker Studios, the leading network of online video content on YouTube. The Walt Disney Company will acquire the company for $500 million with an addition $450 million to come if performance targets are met, the companies announced. With more than 55,000 channels, 380 million subscribers and 5.5 billion views per month on YouTube, Maker is a leader in short-form online video.

“Short-form
online video is growing at an astonishing pace and with Maker Studios,
Disney will now be at the center of this dynamic industry with an
unmatched combination of advanced technology and programming expertise
and capabilities,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer, The Walt Disney Company, in a statement.

2. Fandango: A new deal between Fandango and Veezi will give thousands of independent theater operators the ability to
offer customers online and mobile ticketing, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

3. SundanceNOW Doc Club: SundanceNow Doc Club, the subscription service for streaming documentary films online, announced today that its May
theme is “Chris Marker & His Legacy” and will focus on the work and impact of the legendary director. Curator
Thom Powers has brought together a retrospective look at both Marker¹s
diverse films as well as films inspired by Marker’s work,
including four films that are making their online debut, and Jem Cohen’s “Museum Hours.” Find out more about Doc Club.

4. POV Hackathon: You’ve got only two days left to apply to POV Hackathon, a competition that invites filmmakers, new-media
artists, multimedia journalists and Web developers to collaborate with
designers and developers to create programs that “reinvent documentary
film on the Web.” Applications for the next Hackathons in New York and Los Angeles are due Wednesday, March 26 at 8 pm ET. Find out how to apply here.

5. CinemaCon: Piracy is still a huge concern, MPAA chief Chris Dodd told CinemaCon attendees in his presentation this morning, according to Deadline. “It is today and shall remain as long as I have this job, a top priority.” He also credited theater owners with helping to crack down on piracy by eliminating the illegal use of camcorders. “The good news is we are making some progress,” although he also pointed out that “the most frequent moviegoers tend to own more technological devices than the population at large.”
