The Secret Life of Lance Letscher

Logline: A portrait of collage artist Lance Letscher, as he segues from intricate colorful paper collages to a large outdoor metal mural in one of Austin’s most recognizable business districts, South Congress Ave.

Elevator Pitch: 
An internationally renowned artist, Lance Letscher, has recently been commissioned to install a large metal public art installation in the heart of the South Austin district. Abandoning his usual intricate paper collage work, this quirky artist sets out on a journey to find his new materials.

Sandra Adair, A.C.E. is an award winning feature film editor who resides in Austin, Texas. Adair has enjoyed an ongoing artistic collaboration with film director Richard Linklater, having edited 18 films for him over the past 22 years, some of which include the cult classic “Dazed and Confused,” the 2012 comedy “Bernie” and the critically acclaimed Before trilogy, “Before Sunrise,” “Before Sunset” and “Before Midnight.”

In 2014, Linklater’s “Boyhood” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews and has since won numerous awards, including 3 Golden Globes including that for Best Picture, Drama, and 3 BAFTAs. Boyhood also earned 6 Academy Award nominations, including Best Editing for Sandra Adair. Adair won the American Cinema Editor’s prestigious Eddie Award for best edited dramatic feature in 2015 for “Boyhood.”

Additionally, Adair was nominated for an Eddie Award for Best Editing of a Musical or Comedy by the American Cinema Editors in 2003 for “School of Rock,” and won the Best Edited Documentary at the Woodstock Film Festival in 2012 for the feature documentary “Shepard and Dark,” for director Treva Wurmfeld. Some of Adair’s other credits with other directors include “Everything Must Go,” starring Will Ferrell, and the award-winning documentary “Sushi: The Global Catch.” She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and American Cinema Editors and enjoys supporting and mentoring new filmmakers in the Austin area.

Adair just completed editing Linklater’s “Everybody Wants Some,” due out Spring 2016.

Karen Bernstein – Producer

In her role as a series producer for American Masters and producer of “Ella Fitzgerald – Something To Live For” (1999), Bernstein received a national Emmy award for Outstanding Non-Fiction Series. For producing “Lou Reed – Rock and Roll Heart” (1998), she received a Grammy award. In 2000 she co-produced “American Masters – Juilliard” (2002) and “American Masters – Clint Eastwood.” Her work has been screened at over 100 international film festivals including Sundance and Berlin. “Body of War” was produced with Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro, toured film festivals around the world, and was shortlisted for an Academy Award in 2008. The ITVS-funded film, “Troop 1500,” did an extensive tour around film festivals both in this country and abroad and was broadcast on Independent Lens in 2006.

“transFIGURATION,” a documentary program for PBS on a collaboration between the photographer, Rino Pizzi, and 12 Austin based artists, was broadcast in May 2014, and exists as a permanent KLRU web link. With KLRU, she also produced and directed the award winning documentary portrait of Ballet Austin’s Light: Holocaust and Humanity, in a film entitled “Producing Light.” For the high definition satellite TV series, Gallery HD, she produced two documentaries about two Texas artists and groups, “Julie Speed” and the innovative gallery “Ballroom Marfa.” 

A six-year long documentary project with the Blackwell School Alliance resulted in Children of Giant which Bernstein produced with Galan, Inc. It aired on the PBS series, “Voces,” and was funded by Latino Public Broadcasting. She is currently finishing post production on a documentary about Richard Linklater for the PBS series, American Masters (dir. Louis Black) and her own film, “I’m Going To Make You Love Me.”

Jason Gamble Harter – Director of Photography

Jason Gamble Harter was born and raised in Austin, TX where he attended the University of Texas. Graduating in 2009 from the Radio-Television-Film program with a focus on cinematography, Jason entered the film industry and began working on a variety of high-level productions like international commercials, major network television shows, and studio feature films.

As a freelance cinematographer, Jason works on a diverse collection of projects including commercials, narratives, documentaries, shorts, and music videos. His work has been featured on networks like NBC, MTV, Discovery Channel, the Home Shopping Network; the front pages of content aggregators like Yahoo, Reddit, YouTube, Funnyordie, Roosterteeth; in film festivals like L.A. Shorts Fest, New York Television Festival, SXSW Film Festival and Austin Film Festival.

About the Film:
Less than a year has passed since I received the Academy Award nomination for Best Editing; I am very much on a high. Ready to seize the moment, I’m making good on my bona fides by developing and producing a new documentary that will mark my filmmaking debut.

Current Status: We have shot about half of the footage and are crowdfunding to shoot the remaining footage needed.
