Elevator Pitch: “The Pregnancy Exclusion” examines the case of Marlise Muñoz, a brain-dead pregnant woman whose family was forced to keep her on life support against her wishes. The film shows the human story behind the headlines, and shines a light on a controversial law.
Filmmaker Rebecca Haimowitz has exclusive access to the Muñoz family to share their story in a documentary film. This is a timely and hugely important about a growing trend of laws that seek to control a pregnant woman’s body. Even her dead body.

About the Film: “The Pregnancy Exclusion” follows the Muñoz family’s journey from personal loss, to unwanted media attention, and finally towards activism as they fight to change this law. Their personal tragedy is the springboard for a timely examination of these little-known laws. Few people know that pregnancy exclusion laws actually affect 32 states and counting. This is such an important and complex issue – and I’m committed to creating a thoughtful film that delves beyond sensationalist headlines to really show the human toll behind a polarizing issue.
