‘Walking Dead’ Writer Robert Kirkman’s ‘Thief of Thieves’ Headed to AMC
“The Walking Dead” is going well for AMC; the finale drawing in a record 9 million viewers. So it makes sense that the network’s decided to double-down with the comic book’s co-creator and writer Robert Kirkman.
They’ve announced they’re developing a new series based off of “Thief of Thieves,” a series Kirkman created with Image Comics about a master thief trying to reconcile with his estranged ex-wife and child and get his life back together. He tries to deal with his addiction to thievery by only stealing things that have already been stolen. From the press release:
“Much like ‘The Walking Dead’ brought horror to television in a unique and groundbreaking way, I feel ‘Thief of Thieves’ can do the same thing for heist stories, showing the humanity of all the characters, including the criminals,” explains Kirkman, who created “The Walking Dead” comic in 2003 and still writes each issue, among many other titles.
“AMC recognizes the limitless ideas generated by the comic industry,” says Kirkman. “Their dedication to bringing ‘The Walking Dead’ to life as a TV show has been key to its success and I’m excited about the potential of ‘Thief of Thieves’ to reach similar levels of success.”
While “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” continue to be AMC’s prestige shows, the network’s had more success ratings-wise with genre efforts “The Walking Dead” and “Hell on Wheels.” While news that they’re also developing a period football drama indicates they’re still investing in potentially awardsy dramas, series like Kirkman’s, with more commercial potential, are still a part of the network’s priorities.
