The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has decided not to prosecute director James Toback, Variety reports. District Attorney spokesperson Greg Risling confirmed five sexual assault cases against Toback are being declined after four allegations fell outside the statute of limitations and one accuser failed to show to an interview. The latter could still come forward in the future.
The allegations taken to the LA County District Attorney’s Office were five of over 200 accusations made against Toback since October 2017. The Los Angeles Times first reported on 38 women who accused Toback of harassment, and then 200 additional women contacted the newspaper in the days that followed to share similar stories about the filmmaker.
Numerous stories allege Toback met young women on the street or in parks in New York and Los Angeles and invited them to a hotel room, where the “work interview” would turn sexual. Other accusations accuse Toback of exposing himself and masturbating in front of women. Selma Blair and Rachel McAdams were two of the most prominent actresses to come forward with stories about Toback’s alleged abuse. Toback has denied all of the allegations against him.
According to Variety, the LA County D.A. Office’s Hollywood sex crimes task force reviewed five cases against the director, dating back as far as 1978. Two of the cases were investigated by the LAPD, while three came from the Beverly Hills Police Department.
