‘A Quiet Place’ Sequel: Screenwriters Open to More Films, Say ‘There Are So Many Stories You Could Tell’

“A Quiet Place” exceeded expectations at the box office with its monster $50 million debut, which in today’s universe-building marketplace means Paramount has a potential new horror franchise on its hands. As it turns out, co-screenwriters Bryan Woods and Scott Beck are already thinking about the future of the series. Fandango asked the writing duo if “A Quiet Place” could spawn its own franchise, to which Woods answered affirmatively: “It’s such a fun world. There are so many things you could do.”
“There are so many discarded set pieces, too, just hiding out in Word documents on our computers,” Beck added, implying that the scope of the original draft was a bit larger than just the family story. “So, yeah, there are certainly so many stories you could tell. It’s just really, at the end of the day, who are the characters in this, and what does this situation mean to that dynamic?”
Beck’s comment implies that “A Quiet Place” sequel would not center around the characters featured in the current smash hit and would instead introduce new characters struggling to survive in silence in the same world. In the movie, Krasinski’s character sacrifices his life to protect his children from the monsters. The end finds Emily Blunt’s mother and the children played by Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds figuring out a way to defeat the monsters once and for all. Because the finale introduces a solution to the monster problem, it makes sense a potential “A Quiet Place” sequel would not want to continue with Blunt’s story but focus on characters in another location during the same time period.
Krasinski has not yet expressed interest in a sequel, and producer Brad Fuller told Variety that talks with the writer-director have not occurred. Fuller did not deny that he wants to make “A Quiet Place” sequels, although he said the decision is ultimately up to Paramount.
“We haven’t really had a chance to sit down and talk to each other, as well as talk to Paramount,” Fuller said. “Ultimately, it’s Paramount that makes that decision and nothing has happened yet.”
With a $50 million debut all but guaranteeing a final gross well above $100 million, you have to assume Paramount knows it’s got a franchise on its hands. “A Quiet Place” is now playing in theaters nationwide.
