Why Movie Theaters Are Healthier Than You Think (Podcast)

Movie theaters are facing a lot of challenges these days. Streaming platforms continue to offer a broader set of options, as demonstrated by this week’s announcement about Criterion and Turner Classic Movies’ FilmStruck platform. Nevertheless, the data tells a more complicated story: From the big budget releases to the specialty titles, plenty of movies are doing quite well at the box office. In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson discuss two of the highest-grossing indie releases so far this year (including “The Witch,” above) and also scrutinize the potential for one new bigger release, the Key and Peele comedy “Keanu.” From there, they turn to the news of DreamWorks’ recent acquisition, and look ahead to the company’s future.
