Tom Cruise Joins Doug Liman’s ‘All You Need Is Kill’

Warner Brothers wanted a big star, and they got one. While they initially sought out Brad Pitt for “All You Need Is Kill” (which thankfully seems to have dropped the awful new title it was given “We Mortals Are“) back in October, Tom Cruise began taking a look at it and it seems he likes what he sees as Variety reports he’s joined the project.

The project, an adaptation of the Hiroshi Sakurazaka novel that was picked up in 2010 for a cool $3 million dollars, is a priority at Warner Bros. and you can see why they need a name actor to justify the expenditure. And while the lead character is more suited to a younger actor — Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were rumored at various points — the script, penned by Dante Harper (“Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters“) and rewritten by Joby Harold (“Awake“), has apparently been revised to suit an older thesp. And with Cruise now coming aboard things are going into motion.

Doug Liman, long attached to the movie, will now make this his next project, and flew to the set of “One Shot” in Pittsburgh to meet with Cruise and talk about the movie. The high concept story — which sounds not unlike “Source Code” — follows a soldier in an alien war who finds himself living his last day in battle over and over again after being caught in a time loop, becoming a better soldier along the way. With Cruise set to spend the early part of next year on Joseph Kosinki‘s “Oblivion,” “All You Need Is Kill” isn’t expected to start until late 2012 at the earliest.

So for now, the other Liman projects, which include “Attica,” the Sheldon Turner-penned “Everest,” and the Two-Gun Cohen flick among others, will go to the backburner. As for Cruise, it’s another project that finds that actor working at a relentless pace lately, a far cry from when he used to have a movie come out every year or two at most. It looks like Cruise is determined to remind the world why he’s a marquee star. All in all, a promising project and one we’ll be keen to see develop.
