Adam Sandler’s upcoming Netflix feature has found its leading lady. Jennifer Hudson has just joined the ‘90s-set film, titled “Sandy Wexler,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Oscar-winner will star as a talented singer named Courtney Clarke, opposite Sandler, a talent manager working in Los Angeles who represents a group of eccentric clients on the fringes of show business. His devotion is put to the test when he falls in love with his newest client, Courtney, who he discovers at an amusement park.

The film will be directed by “The Do-Over’s” Steven Brill. The script is written by Paul Sado, Dan Bulla and Sandler. Sandler will produce via his Happy Madison Productions banner along with Allen Covert. Executive producers include Barry Bernardi and Tim Herlihy.

Filming is expected to begin filming in Los Angeles on August 2 and the movie will be released on all Netflix territories in 2017. This is Sandler’s third project in his four-film deal with the streaming service, the first was “The Ridiculous 6,” followed by “The Do-Over.”

Sandler’s last films haven’t garnered popular reviews. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich gave “The Do-Over” a D-, writing in his review that the film was so awful, it will make you wish Sandler would stop trying. Other critics stated similar things, with the comedy having a 5% Rotten Tomato score.

But the casting of Hudson, who is a Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy-winner, is a step in the right direction. The actress and singer has attached herself to critically acclaimed projects such as Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq” and 2013’s “Black Nativity.” She recently made her Broadway debut in the revival of “The Color Purple” and can be seen next as Motormouth Maybelle in NBC’s special “Hairspray Live!”
