Set to make its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival on October 8, “She Started It” is a compelling documentary that follows five passionate, trailblazing young women who strive to compete and thrive in the ruthlessly competitive boys club of high tech start-ups.

Directed and produced by Nora Poggi and Insiyah Saeed, the film’s subjects include Thuy Truong, Stacey Ferreira, Sheena Allen, Brienne Ghafourifar, Agathe Molinar, and feature them as they pitch VCs, build teams, bring products to market, fail and start again.

The trailer gives a sneak peek at the lives of these women and also some great insight about the cultural roots of female underrepresentation in entrepreneurship including pervasive self-doubt, fear of failure and risk aversion among young women. Young girls also speak out about the lack of female role models and investors and what being an entrepreneur means to them.

“She Started It” marks French journalist and filmmaker Poggi’s and Saeed’s directorial debut. Both are producers based in Silicon Valley, where they have interviewed key techies in the field.

“Our goal is to reach one million girls with this film in 2016 and show them that if you fall, you can get back up. We want girls who will see the film to know that they can take risks, that failure is okay and that it is worth trying something you are passionate about,” the filmmakers stated. “Studies show that girls give up on math and science when they get a bad grade in school, but boys don’t. Fear of failure hits girls the hardest and prevents them from going after their dreams. We want girls (and boys) to develop more entrepreneurial skills from a young age, resourcefulness, resilience and grit, no matter what career they get into.”
