The Telluride Film Festival

The fall festival season began earlier this week with the start of the Venice Film Festival, but it really took flight in Telluride, where Venice hits “Roma,” “The Favourite” and “First Man” all landed in the Colorado mountain town with fresh buzz. But now they face a more exclusive crowd of industry insiders and discerning festival audiences who will play key roles in determining the next phase of Oscar season. And so far, it feels quite different than most: Netflix is kicking up its awards season game in bigger ways than ever before, even though “Roma” doesn’t look anything like a typical Oscar frontrunner. But then again, neither does “The Favourite.” In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson meet up on a Telluride park bench to discuss the buzz so far and why it will matter in the months ahead. (Note: They had yet to see several major Telluride films, including “The Old Man and the Gun” and “First Man,” when this episode was recorded.)
